Where it all began! King David moved the capital from Hebron to The City of David after he conquered it from the Jebusites. This was the original Jerusalem. Covered by centuries of dirt, the buried city was discovered under a potato field by Sir Charles Warren, a British military officer and archaeologist, sent to the Holy Land by the Palestine Exploration Fund in 1867. Exploring the Gihon Spring and its underground tunnels, he found a vertical shaft that led to a man-made tunnel connecting the spring below to the upper-part of the hill. In the early part of the 20th century Baron Edmund Rothchild purchased 70% of the current City of David and excavations began in 1913. Among the exciting findings here was archaeologist Eilat Matzar’s discovery of King David’s palace. Those that have traveled with me to Israel will recognize much of this video. Those anticipating a visit will enjoy learning more about this important site. [Photos 1900 and 2024]
